Utah PURPLE Tears campaign

Dealing with an inconsolable crying infant can be difficult, in fact, frustration with a crying baby is the number one reason someone shakes and harms an infant. Frustration with a crying infant usually results because many people don’t know that all infant’s go through a phase of increased crying in the first few months of life. It’s called the Period of PURPLE Crying and it’s a new way for parents to understand normal increased crying in healthy babies.

In an effort to educate families about the Period of PURPLE Crying, we are launching a statewide campaign called PURPLE Tears. The tears campaign involves placing large vinyl floor decals in the shape of a purple tear drop in various locations throughout Utah. The decals contain messages like, “Did you know your baby would cry like this?” and then direct people to our website PURPLEcrying.info to learn more. The PURPLE Tears campaign is an important component of a yearlong Public Education Campaign to continue to create awareness about the Period of PURPLE Crying and provide accurate information about normal infant crying to parents, caregivers and society generally. Since April, we have been using various forms of print and broadcast media to get this information to families, including a television spot which is airing on Comcast cable and a radio PSA airing on several radio outlets.

We encourage you to take the time to explore the website and learn more about the Period of PURPLE Crying and a number of other child development topics. We also encourage you to share this information with others and help educate families about normal infant crying and prevent infant abuse.

The Period of PURPLE Crying was developed by Dr. Ronald G. Barr, a world renowned developmental pediatrician, and the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome (NCSBS). The NCSBS would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our many wonderful supporters of the Period of PURPLE Crying tears campaign.
